Abstract
Genital chlamydial infection is increasing and now more common than gonorrhea.
Chlamydial infection of the lower genital tract usually progresses to endometritis and salpingitis which may cause such sequlae as tubal infertility and ectopic pregnancy.
This study was planned to evaluate the significance of the detection of chlamydial deoxyribonucleic acid in endocervix and tubes by polymerase chain reaction.
71 infertile women who were undertaken diagnostic laparoscopy at infertility clinic had serum drawn for chlamydial antibody test by ELISA. PCR test for detection of chlamydial antibody test by ELISA. PCR test for detection of chlamydial DNA was
carried
out in both endocervix and tube.
We divided 71 infertile women into 3 groups by laparoscopic findings.
Each group included 29 patients with tubal factor infertility(Group I), 20 patients for tubal reversal(Group II), and 22 patients with nontubal factor infertility (Group III) respectively.
@ES The results were as follows.
@EN 1. The positive rate of serum chlamydial antibody in group I, II and III was 65.5%(19/29 cases), 40%(8/20 cases) and 18.2%(4/22 cases) respectively.
2. In chlamydial positive patients, the proportion of tubal factor infertility was 61.3% (19/31 cases).
3. All 3 women who were PCR positive in endocervical swab were also chlamydial seropositive.
Chlamydial DNA was detected in only one tubal specimen that was seronegative.
In conclusion, our data suggest that serological test for chlamydia trachomatis is a useful parameter in tubal infertility(p<0.01).
Further study of PCR in endocervix will be of value in future management of chlamydial infection of female genital tract.
